Morning: Breakfast, then a short transfer to Arusha Airport for the scheduled flight to the central Serengeti. The Rift wall falls away beneath the wing and the plains open out. Afternoon: Your guide meets you at the airstrip. Hot lunch at the lodge and time to settle in. Evening: Late afternoon game drive through the Seronera river lines, prime territory for lion and leopard.

Morning: Out at first light while the air is cool and the cats are still working. Afternoon: Picnic lunch in the field, so the day is never interrupted, then on to whichever country is proving best. Evening: Return to the lodge as the light turns, with drinks on the deck above the waterhole.

Morning: A second full day, with your guide free to follow the herds and the word passing between vehicles. Afternoon: This is when patience pays: a leopard along a limb, a cheetah reading the grass. Evening: Sundowners on the plains before dinner at the lodge.

Morning: An optional balloon flight lifts off before dawn, with breakfast laid out in the grass on landing. Otherwise, a final morning drive on the plains. Afternoon: Turn east and climb toward the Ngorongoro highlands, savannah giving way to green crater country. Evening: Arrive in time to take in the caldera before dinner on the rim.

Morning: Descend early onto the crater floor, six hundred metres into a bowl sealed by its own walls. Lion on the short grass, flamingo on the soda lake, and a standing chance of black rhino. Afternoon: A private bush lunch is set within the crater before you climb the far rim. Evening: Drive south to Tarangire, where the first baobabs come into view, and check in among them.

Morning: A full day among the great elephant herds and the ancient baobabs of Tarangire. Afternoon: The private concession allows a guided walking safari for those who want it. Evening: An optional night drive brings out civet, genet and, with luck, leopard.

Morning: Breakfast at the resort, and a last hour by the sea if the flight allows. Afternoon: Transfer to Zanzibar International Airport. Evening: Onward international departure.
