Lemosho Route
The route
Lemosho Route
The Lemosho Route is one of Kilimanjaro’s most scenic and highly recommended trails. Approaching the mountain from the western side, it offers a quieter start, rich forest, open moorland, dramatic ridges, and a longer acclimatisation profile that gives climbers a strong chance of reaching the summit safely and confidently.
A Beautiful Western Approach
The Lemosho Route begins on the quieter western side of Mount Kilimanjaro, giving trekkers a more peaceful and remote start to the climb. The early stages pass through lush rainforest, where the trail feels wild, quiet, and full of natural beauty.
This route is ideal for travellers who want more than a quick summit attempt. It offers time to settle into the mountain, enjoy the changing landscapes, and build confidence gradually before the higher altitude sections begin.
Less Crowded and More Scenic
One of the biggest advantages of the Lemosho Route is its quieter atmosphere during the first days of the climb. Compared to busier routes, Lemosho gives trekkers more space, more silence, and a stronger sense of wilderness.
As the route crosses toward the Shira Plateau, the views begin to open beautifully. Wide skies, volcanic landscapes, distant ridges, and the presence of Kibo ahead make Lemosho one of the most visually rewarding ways to experience Kilimanjaro.
Excellent Acclimatisation Profile
Lemosho is widely loved because it allows more time for the body to adjust to altitude. The route is usually climbed over seven to eight days, giving trekkers a slower and more comfortable progression up the mountain.
This longer schedule can make a major difference. With better acclimatisation, climbers often feel stronger, sleep better, and approach summit night with more confidence. For many travellers, Lemosho offers one of the best balances between scenery, pacing, and summit success.
From Forest to Shira Plateau
The route begins in dense rainforest before gradually rising into heath and moorland. As the forest disappears, the landscape opens into the wide and ancient Shira Plateau, one of Kilimanjaro’s most impressive high altitude areas.
The Shira Plateau gives the climb a powerful sense of scale. Trekkers walk across open terrain with sweeping views, feeling the mountain slowly reveal itself. This section is one of the reasons Lemosho is often considered among the most beautiful Kilimanjaro routes.
Joining the Southern Circuit
After crossing the western slopes, Lemosho usually joins the southern circuit, where it shares some of Kilimanjaro’s most famous sections with the Machame Route. These may include Lava Tower, Barranco Valley, and the Barranco Wall.
This part of the climb adds variety and adventure. Lava Tower supports acclimatisation through the climb high and sleep low approach, while Barranco Wall offers an exciting but non technical challenge. The route then continues through dramatic alpine scenery toward the final summit base.
Who Lemosho Is Best For
The Lemosho Route is best for travellers who want a scenic, well paced, and less rushed Kilimanjaro climb. It is especially suitable for those who value acclimatisation, quieter trails at the beginning, and a more complete mountain experience.
It works well for fit beginners, experienced hikers, and anyone who wants to give themselves a stronger chance of reaching Uhuru Peak. For many climbers, Lemosho is one of the finest routes on Kilimanjaro because it combines beauty, safety, rhythm, and a deep sense of wilderness.
