Great Migration

Great Migration

When to go January to March for calving season, June to July for western movement, and July to October for northern Serengeti river crossings
The Region Southern, Central, Western, and Northern Serengeti, Tanzania

A journey shaped by rain, grass, and instinct.

"

The Great Migration is one of Tanzania’s most powerful wildlife experiences, but it is not a single event or one fixed moment in the year. It is a continuous journey of wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles moving across the Serengeti ecosystem in search of fresh grazing, water, and safer breeding grounds.

Every season tells a different story in the Great Migration. From January to March, the southern Serengeti and Ndutu plains become a nursery as thousands of wildebeest calves are born within a short period. This attracts predators, creating some of the most intense wildlife viewing of the year.

As the rains change and the grass begins to dry, the herds move through the central and western Serengeti, spreading across open plains and woodland areas. This period is ideal for travelers who want fewer crowds, beautiful landscapes, and strong wildlife encounters along the migration route.

From July to October, the migration reaches the northern Serengeti, where the famous river crossings can take place. These crossings are unpredictable, emotional, and dramatic, as the herds gather along the riverbanks before attempting to cross crocodile-filled waters.

The best Great Migration safari is not planned by dates alone. It is planned around the season, the movement of the herds, your preferred experience, and the right camp locations. At Inspire Tanzania Safaris, we help you choose the best region and timing so your journey follows the real rhythm of the migration.
