9 Days — Great Migration Safari

Ngorongoro Crater • 9 Days • From $5,200
Ngorongoro Crater 9 Days From $5,200

Overview

This nine-day safari is the most complete version of the Great Migration experience — opening with a walking safari in Arusha National Park before the journey moves into the heart of the Serengeti ecosystem. More than two million wildebeest, zebra, and gazelle move in a continuous circuit through the Serengeti, driven by rainfall and fresh grass, pursued at every step by the predators that follow the herds. The Northern Serengeti, where the Mara River crossings take place, is the most dramatic chapter of that movement — and this itinerary puts you at the river's edge for three days. The walking safari on Day Two is a deliberate opening. Arusha National Park, at the foot of Mount Meru, offers a genuinely different perspective on the African bush — on foot, the scale changes, the sounds become more immediate, and wildlife that would pass unremarkably from a vehicle demands full attention. It is a considered way to begin, calibrating the senses before the full scale of the Serengeti arrives. From Kogatende Airstrip, the journey moves into the Northern Serengeti and the Mara River — two full days at the crossing points, then south to the Central Serengeti for a full day in the Seronera region. The Ngorongoro Crater and Tarangire National Park complete the safari. The Crater delivers the concentrated world of the caldera — black rhino, dense lion prides, and flamingo-lined Lake Magadi. Tarangire closes with its ancient baobab landscape and the largest elephant herds in the northern circuit. Nine days, five ecosystems, one complete northern Tanzania migration safari.

Day by Day

Day 1

Arrival — Kilimanjaro Airport to Arusha

ARRIVAL

You are met at Kilimanjaro International Airport and transferred directly to your lodge in Arusha. The drive passes through the foothills of the mountain — on a clear day the summit is visible. Check in, settle, breathe. The trip begins properly tomorrow.

EVENING — WELCOME BRIEFING

Over dinner, your safari consultant walks you through the nine days ahead — destinations, what to expect at each stop, and a real-time update on migration conditions in the Northern Serengeti. It is an easy conversation, not a lecture. By the end of it, the Mara River already feels close.

Day 2

Arusha National Park — Walking Safari

MORNING — WALKING SAFARI

Arusha National Park sits at the foot of Mount Meru, within sight of Kilimanjaro on a clear morning. The day begins on foot — a walking safari with an armed ranger and your guide through the park's montane forest and open savanna zones. On foot, everything is different: the sounds sharpen, distances feel real, and wildlife that passes quietly from a vehicle demands full attention. Giraffe, buffalo, warthog, and colobus monkey are regularly encountered on the walk. The experience recalibrates how you see the bush — and it is the ideal preparation for the scale of the Serengeti that follows.

AFTERNOON

A game drive through the park's central zone follows the morning walk. The Momella Lakes — shallow alkaline waters that attract flamingo, pelican, and a remarkable variety of wading birds — are the afternoon highlight. The park is compact but diverse; the dramatic Rift Valley escarpment frames the view and Kilimanjaro appears on the horizon when the sky is clear. The contrast between the morning walk and the afternoon drive makes for an unexpectedly rich and full day.

EVENING

Return to your Arusha lodge. A relaxed dinner and an early rest — the flight to the Northern Serengeti leaves in the morning.

Day 3

Flight to Northern Serengeti — Mara River Game Drive

MORNING — FLIGHT TO KOGATENDE

Board a morning flight from Arusha to Kogatende Airstrip in the Northern Serengeti. The flight itself is part of the experience — the landscape below shifts from highland green to the wide, tawny expanse of the Serengeti as you descend. Your guide meets you on the airstrip and the first game drive begins immediately. The destination: the Mara River.

TRANSFER & FIRST WILDLIFE ENCOUNTER

The drive to the river passes through country that is alive with the migration. Columns of wildebeest move across the plains, zebra scatter and regroup, and the predators that follow the herds — lion, cheetah, spotted hyena — are encountered regularly along the way. Your guide reads the landscape as you travel, stopping wherever the wildlife demands it. There is no wasted time on this drive.

AFTERNOON

After check-in and lunch at the lodge, the afternoon game drive heads back to the river crossing points. The Mara River crossings are one of the most dramatic moments in the natural world — thousands of wildebeest gathering on the bank, the hesitation, the first animal committing to the water, the chaos that follows. Crocodiles hold their position in the deeper channels. Lions wait on the far bank. Every crossing is different; every one stays with you.

EVENING

Return to camp as the light fades. Dinner, the sounds of the Northern Serengeti, and an early rest. There is more of this tomorrow

Day 4

Full Day in the Northern Serengeti

MORNING — RIVER CROSSING POINTS

Rise early. The morning game drive heads directly to the Mara River crossing points — this is peak wildlife activity time, and the cool hours before midday are when the herds build on the banks and crossings are most likely. Your guide works the radio network of guides in the area, tracking which crossing points are active and positioning the vehicle accordingly. The photography at this hour, in this light, is exceptional.

MIDDAY

Return to the lodge late morning for a freshly prepared lunch. A short rest in the shade — the pace of a migration safari is rewarding but full. The afternoon is coming.

AFTERNOON — PLAINS & PREDATORS

The late afternoon drive covers the wider Northern Serengeti landscape: open plains where cheetah hunt, riverine woodland where leopard rest, the vast herds moving across the northern corridor as they follow the grass. The golden light of late afternoon makes every sighting feel cinematic. Optional: Hot Air Balloon Safari — A pre-dawn ascent over the Northern Serengeti plains, floating silently above the migration herds. After landing, a champagne bush breakfast in the field. USD 500 per person.

Day 5

Northern Serengeti to Central Serengeti

MORNING — FINAL MARA RIVER DRIVE

One last morning at the river. A final drive through the crossing points and the surrounding plains — by now your guide knows exactly where to look and what the herds are doing. Even a morning without a full crossing delivers extraordinary wildlife: the wildebeest massed on the bank, the crocodiles still and patient in the water, the atmosphere of a place where something large is always about to happen.

AFTERNOON — DRIVE SOUTH TO CENTRAL SERENGETI

After lunch, begin the scenic overland transit south toward the Central Serengeti — approximately two hours through the heart of the park. The landscape opens and shifts as you travel south: the riverine bush of the north giving way to the wide, golden grassland of the Seronera region. Game drive continues as you drive to the lodge — lions are encountered on this route with remarkable regularity.

EVENING

Arrive in the Central Serengeti and settle into your lodge. A different atmosphere from the north — quieter, more open. Dinner under the Serengeti sky. Optional: Hot Air Balloon Safari — Pre-dawn ascent over the Central Serengeti plains, followed by champagne breakfast in the bush. USD 500 per person.

Day 6

Full Day in the Central Serengeti

MORNING

This is a full day out — picnic lunch packed, no return to the lodge at midday. The Seronera River Valley is the focus: a wildlife corridor where predator sightings are as reliable as anywhere in Africa year-round. Your guide reads the landscape with genuine expertise, finding what most people miss. Lions are often encountered in groups here — full prides, not lone individuals. Leopards favour the fig trees along the river, visible from the road if you know where to look.

AFTERNOON

The afternoon moves to the open grassland beyond the river — cheetah territory — and the granite kopjes where smaller predators and rock hyrax share the afternoon sun. Picnic lunch is taken in the field, the Central Serengeti plains spreading out in every direction. It is a different kind of day from the river crossings — quieter, more patient — and equally rewarding. Optional: Hot Air Balloon Safari — Pre-dawn ascent over the Central Serengeti, followed by champagne breakfast in the field. USD 490 per person.

EVENING

Back at the lodge by sunset. Dinner, a glass of wine, the sounds of the Serengeti. Tomorrow: the Crater.

Day 7

Ngorongoro Crater

MORNING — DRIVE TO THE CRATER

An early breakfast and a drive south from the Central Serengeti toward the Ngorongoro Conservation Area — approximately two to three hours. The landscape changes markedly as the road climbs into the highlands: the open savanna gives way to highland forest, the temperature drops, the air carries the scent of moisture and earth. At the rim, the crater opens below you — a 260 square kilometre caldera that contains one of the most extraordinary concentrations of wildlife on the continent.

FULL DAY ON THE CRATER FLOOR

The descent into the crater is an experience in itself. On the floor you encounter resident elephant herds, enormous buffalo gatherings, and the flamingo-lined shores of Lake Magadi, the crater's shallow soda lake. The Ngorongoro is one of the few places in Africa where black rhino sightings are a genuine probability — the resident population is protected and visible with a regularity that most other parks cannot offer. Lions here are numerous and have never known life beyond the crater walls. Picnic lunch is taken on the floor, surrounded by the landscape.

EVENING

Late afternoon ascent from the crater and a drive to your lodge in Karatu. Dinner with the highland air cool around you and the day's sightings still settling.

Accommodation Options

Exclusive Ngorongoro Neptune Lodge
Day 8

Tarangire National Park — Return to Arusha

MORNING — TARANGIRE

Drive from Karatu south into Tarangire National Park — about an hour through changing savanna. Tarangire is defined by two things above all: its ancient baobab trees, which rise from red earth with a scale and age that puts everything else in perspective, and its elephants. The park holds the largest elephant concentration in northern Tanzania, and family herds — including calves — are encountered with regularity throughout the day. The Tarangire River is the dry-season focal point for wildlife across the wider ecosystem, drawing zebra, wildebeest, giraffe, and buffalo alongside the elephant.

AFTERNOON

A full afternoon game drive through the park's central zone. Lion and leopard are regularly sighted in the tall grass and tree cover along the river. The birdlife is outstanding — over 500 species recorded, including ostriches, hornbills, and the vivid lilac-breasted roller, one of the most photographed birds in Africa. Picnic lunch is taken in the park.

EVENING

Exit Tarangire and drive north to Arusha. Final safari evening — a relaxed dinner and time to reflect on nine days in the field.
