The Overview

7 Day Machame Route

Known as the legendary Whiskey Route, the 7 Day Machame Route is one of the most scenic and rewarding ways to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. This carefully designed itinerary gives climbers extra time to acclimatize, helping improve summit success while allowing you to fully experience Kilimanjaro’s breathtaking landscapes.

From lush rainforest and giant heathers to alpine deserts and glacial summit views, the Machame Route offers a powerful sense of progression as you move through the mountain’s changing environments.

With an additional acclimatization day compared to the shorter route, the 7 Day Machame trek is ideal for adventurers seeking a safer, more enjoyable ascent to Uhuru Peak, 5,895 metres.

Why Choose the 7 Day Machame Route?

The extra acclimatization day can make a major difference in comfort, safety, and summit success. Many climbers find the 7 day version more enjoyable because it allows the body to adapt naturally to the altitude while still experiencing all of Machame’s iconic scenery.

02
  • Airport Planet Lodge → Machame Gate

    Road • 01:00h

The road winds through lush foothills toward Kilimanjaro’s rainforest realm.

After breakfast, drive to Machame Gate where registration formalities are completed before beginning your trek. The trail winds through dense rainforest filled with towering trees, exotic flowers, and playful colobus monkeys. The steady ascent introduces you to Kilimanjaro’s magical ecosystem.

Where you'll stay

Mid Range Machame Camp (2,835 meters).
03

Leave the rainforest behind as the trail climbs into the heather and moorland zone. Dramatic views begin to open up across the Shira Plateau, with Kibo Peak dominating the horizon. This shorter trekking day allows your body to gradually adjust to the altitude.

Where you'll stay

Mid Range Shira Camp 2 (3,850 meters).
04

Today is one of the most important acclimatization days on the mountain. You’ll climb high to Lava Tower before descending to Barranco Camp, a proven “climb high, sleep low” strategy that helps your body adapt to altitude. The landscapes become dramatic and surreal, with giant senecio plants and sweeping alpine scenery.

Where you'll stay

Mid Range Barranco Camp (3,900 meters).
05

Begin the day by climbing the famous Barranco Wall, a thrilling but non technical scramble offering incredible panoramic views. Unlike the shorter route, today is intentionally shorter to aid acclimatization and recovery before summit push day. After descending into Karanga Valley, continue gradually to Karanga Camp. This extra acclimatization day is what makes the 7 day Machame Route significantly more comfortable and successful.

Where you'll stay

Mid Range Karanga Camp (3,995m 4,035m).
06

Today’s trek is shorter but steeper as you make your way to Barafu Camp, your base camp for the summit attempt. After lunch, rest, hydrate, and prepare your gear for the midnight summit ascent. Early dinner is served before a few hours of sleep.

Where you'll stay

Mid Range Barafu Camp (4,640m 4,680m).
07

Around midnight, begin your summit ascent beneath a sky filled with stars. Slowly trek uphill toward Stella Point before continuing along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. Witness an unforgettable sunrise above the clouds before descending to Barafu Camp for a short rest and continuing down to Mweka Camp. This is the longest and most challenging day, but also the most rewarding.
